Black walnut shells cut for brown dyes
The American black walnut (Juglans nigra) has a very high tannin content and was already used by some Native American tribes to dye leather, bones and the like.
In contrast to the native walnut, the tannin content is approx. 40% higher, so it is well to use for darker shades.
The unbroken shells are hard as stone and are very difficult to crack.
Also good for dyeing on linen, cotton or hemp fibres.

Alder Cones for brown dyes
Alder cones (Alnus Glutinosa, black alder) dyes beautiful brown tones.
We recommend to use 150% of the material weight, otherwise the colour will be very light.
The cones, just like the bark, must also be soaked for at least 24 hours before dyeing.
You can play wonderfully with different mixtures. Madder and Buckthorn bark is very suitable. There are also great results with copper and iron sulphate.
